Paper budgets have limitations. I tried them, too. Repeatedly over several years trying to find a better way.
Paper budgets didn’t prevent me from overspending. And they didn’t prevent me from having to return items to the store because I needed the money to pay a bill or for food.
In fact, I once had to return a Christmas present for my son when he was a toddler because we couldn’t afford to keep everything that we bought for him. This definitely isn’t one of my proudest moments, but it is the result of what a poor budgeting method can create.
And because of this EMBARRASSMENT and sense of DUTY to my family, I went on a path to figure out how to avoid this from happening again.
After years of trial and error, I finally developed a tool to break free from the ‘return walk of shame’. Then, I further refined it to include the necessary pieces to keep my money on track, like budgeting guidelines, and sinking funds.
